How to Stay Healthy in Winter After 40 (Without Hibernating Until Spring)

Winter motivation disappeared? Same. Let's chat about staying healthy, strong and sane until the weather decides to behave itself š
First of all... winter is a scam š
Can we just acknowledge that winter has arrived and suddenly everything feels harder?
Getting out of bed is harder.
Going for a walk is harder.
Drinking water is harder.
Even putting on a sports bra feels like a personal attack some mornings.
A few months ago we were happily heading out for walks, enjoying longer days and feeling a bit more motivated. Then winter rolls in, daylight disappears by dinner time, and somehow the couch becomes your soulmate.
If you're feeling that right now, you're not alone.
And if you're in your 40s, 50s or beyond, navigating peri-menopause or menopause, winter can feel like it turns the dial up even more.
So... why do we suddenly feel like tiny winter gremlins?
It's not all in your head.
As we get older, our hormones, sleep, stress levels and energy reserves all play a bigger role in how we feel day-to-day.
Throw colder weather into the mix and suddenly:
You're more tired.
You crave comfort food.
You move less.
Your motivation packs its bags and leaves town.
The annoying thing is that when we're tired, we naturally look for quick energy.
Hello toast.
Hello biscuits.
Hello random pantry snacks that somehow end up in your hand while you're making a cup of tea.
No judgement from me. I've been there too.
My confession...
Truthfully?
Even as a coach, winter tests me.
There are mornings when I stare at my walking shoes and think, "Absolutely not."
There are nights when the couch is calling my name louder than any workout ever could.
The difference isn't that I feel motivated all the time.
The difference is that I've learnt not to rely on motivation.
Because motivation is flaky.
Habits are reliable.
And that's what gets you through winter.
Winter isn't the season to be perfect. It's the season to protect momentum.
Rightio then... what actually helps?
Not a detox.
Not a 28-day challenge.
Not surviving on lettuce leaves until spring.
The women who feel good heading into spring aren't usually doing anything extreme.
They're just doing the basics consistently.
They're moving their bodies.
They're getting enough protein.
They're drinking water.
They're going to bed a little earlier.
They're doing the boring stuff.
And honestly?
The boring stuff works.
Adie's Winter Survival Tips āļø
ā Start your day with protein
A protein-rich breakfast keeps you fuller for longer, helps manage cravings and gives your body the building blocks it needs to support muscle, energy and healthy ageing.
Plus, it's a lot harder to face-plant into the biscuit tin at 10am when you've actually eaten a proper breakfast.
š¶āāļø Move your body daily
Notice I didn't say smash yourself.
Just move.
A walk.
A workout.
A dance around the kitchen while making dinner.
Movement boosts energy, supports mood and helps keep your metabolism ticking along.
Some days 20 minutes is enough.
šŖ Keep strength training
This one matters more than ever after 40.
Strength training helps maintain muscle, supports bone health and keeps your metabolism working for you.
No pink dumbbells and endless cardio required.
Just enough challenge to remind your body that we're still strong around here.
š„£ Eat warming foods that actually nourish you
Winter is soup season and honestly, I'm here for it.
Think protein, veggies, fibre and meals that leave you feeling satisfied rather than hunting for snacks an hour later.
Comfort food can absolutely fit.
We're aiming for balance, not perfection.
š“ Protect your sleep
If you've heard me say this once, you've heard me say it a thousand times.
Sleep changes everything.
Energy.
Cravings.
Recovery.
Mood.
Weight loss.
Winter is actually a great time to lean into earlier nights and give your body the recovery it deserves.
Here's the thing...
Most women don't suddenly gain weight or lose fitness over winter.
It happens quietly.
A missed workout here.
A few extra snacks there.
A little less movement.
A little less consistency.
Then spring arrives and suddenly it feels like you're starting all over again.
But the opposite is true too.
A few walks.
A few workouts.
A few nourishing meals.
A few early nights.
Those little habits add up as well.
Small things repeated = big results.
Before you go...
I want you to remember this.
This season isn't really about fitting into a dress by summer.
It's bigger than that.
You're building strength for your future.
You're looking after your bones.
Your muscles.
Your confidence.
Your energy.
Your ability to keep doing the things you love well into your 60s, 70s and beyond.
That's what we're really training for.
So if winter has you feeling a bit flat right now, don't focus on being perfect.
Focus on keeping the promises you make to yourself.
Even the tiny ones.
Because the women who feel strongest by spring aren't the most motivated.
They're the ones who simply kept showing up.
And honestly?
That's pretty bloody powerful.
Feeling like winter has knocked your routine sideways?
Come and hang out with us.
No extremes. No punishment. No starting over every Monday.
Just simple habits, strength, support and a bunch of women figuring it out together. š
You've got this.
